Low residue diet two days prior to colonoscopy

Two days prior to your clear liquid colonoscopy prep day, please follow this Low-Residue Diet:  limit high-fiber foods, like whole-grain breads and cereals, nuts, seeds, raw or dried fruits, and vegetables.  For example if your colonoscopy is on a Monday you would follow this diet Friday and Saturday, your clear liquid colonoscopy prep day on Sunday.  

What You Can Eat

Grains

  • Refined or enriched white breads and plain crackers, such as saltines or Melba toast (no seeds)
  • Cooked cereals, like farina, cream of wheat, and grits
  • Cold cereals, like puffed rice and corn flakes
  • White rice, noodles, and refined pasta

Fruits and Vegetables:  peel all fruits and vegetables and avoid the seeds.

  • Well-cooked fresh vegetables or canned vegetables without seeds, such as asparagus tips, beets, green beans, carrots, mushrooms, spinach, squash (no seeds), and pumpkin
  • Cooked potatoes without skin
  • Tomato sauce (no seeds)
  • Ripe bananas
  • Soft cantaloupe
  • Honeydew
  • Canned or cooked fruits without seeds or skin, like applesauce or canned pears
  • Avocado

Milk, Dairy Products and Condiments:

  • Milk, cream, sour cream, ice cream without nuts or fruit
  • Yogurt, plain or flavored without  nuts or fruit
  • Mild cheeses without seeds or nuts
  • Margarine, butter, and oils
  • Mayonnaise and ketchup
  • Smooth sauces and salad dressing
  • Soy sauce
  • Clear jelly, honey, and syrup

 

Meats , Fish, Eggs

  • Chicken, pork, fish, eggs

Sweets and Snacks:  as always in moderation:

  • Plain cakes and cookies
  • Gelatin, plain puddings, custard, and sherbet
  • Ice cream and ice pops
  • Hard candy
  • Pretzels

Drinks:  Safe beverages include:

  • Coffee, tea, carbonated beverages
  • Milk
  • Juices without sees or pulps like apple or no pulp orange
  • Strained vegetable juices

 

 

**Foods to Avoid:  Do not eat any of the following foods:**

  • All foods containing seeds, nuts, or coconut
  • Whole-grain products, including breads, cereals, crackers, pasta, rice,
  • Raw or dried fruits, like prunes, berries, raisins, figs, and pineapple
  • Raw vegetables
  • Certain cooked vegetables, including peas, broccoli, winter squash, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, potatoes with skin
  • Beans, baked beans, lentils, or tofu,
  • Red meats, lamb and smoked or cured deli meats
  • Cheese with seeds, nuts, or fruit
  • Crunchy peanut butter, jam, marmalade, or preserves
  • Pickles, olives, relish, sauerkraut, and horseradish
  • Popcorn
  • Fruit juices with pulp or seeds, prune juice, or pear nectar
